The default way to connect your business tools is to rent the connection. You sign up for an integration platform, pay every month, and it sits in the middle between you and your data. It works right up until the day it does not: the price goes up, a plan gets restructured, or the connector you rely on quietly changes what it does.

Why renting feels fine at first

Renting an integration is easy to start and easy to justify. The monthly fee is small, the setup is quick, and someone else worries about the plumbing. The catch shows up later, and it is structural, not a matter of picking the right vendor.

• You never actually hold the connection. It lives on someone else's servers, on their terms.
• Your data flows through a third party to get from the platform to you.
• Pricing is theirs to change, usually per task or per step, right when you scale.
• If they drop a connector or shut down, your workflow goes with them.

What owning the connector actually means

Rent enough of your business and you do not really run it, you operate someone else's version of it. Owning the connection is a small change in how you buy and a large change in who is in control.
